Harry W. Wellford has made his last decision after 30 years as a federal judge — he's decided what he will do next now that he's retired from the Sixth U.S Circuit Court of Appeals. His last day on the job was Friday. Wellford will be a judge of another sort — hearing cases involving theological questions on a Presbyterian synod.
50 years ago — 1976
If you had the Aggravation of a Dirty Mother in a Golden Cadillac, what would be? A little tipsy, probably. They are the names of three frothy mixed drinks in vogue in Memphis pubs. Though serious drinkers might scoff at them, those who like a milk-shake-type drink may find them to their liking.
75 years ago — 1951
The 24th annual observance of National Business Women's Week, sponsored
here by the Business and Professional Women's Club of Memphis, will end with a banquet tonight in the Panorama Room of the King Cotton. Judge Elizabeth McCain of Juvenile Court will address the dinner meeting on "Full Partnership for the Job Ahead" — theme for the week-long observance.
100 years ago — 1926
The race cars which have whirled the course at the Indianapolis Speedway and other famous b board and brick courses will be seen in action at the Tri-State Fair auto races Saturday, according to the announcement of the fair motor speed board. These creations comprised the Frontenac, with which Gaston Chevrolet won the Hoosier classic shortly before his death; a 122-cubic inch Miller, which was driven into the money at the Indiana capital in 1924 and 1925, and the Peugeot motored Elcar special of Al Cotey, former Memphian, which was driven to the classic win by Howdy Wilcox before he met his death. Never before has such a classic array of motor creations been entered here.
