The death of master violinist Isaac Stern on Sunday meant the world lost a living legend. It also meant Memphis would not hear a performance by the man who helped the careers of Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma. The internationally renowned performer and recording artist, 81, was scheduled to play with the IRIS Orchestra at Germantown Performing Arts Centre on Dec. 15. The concert would have paired Stern with his son, conductor Michael Stern, who is with his relatives in New York City.
50 years ago — 1976
Memphis Park Commission officials have reported revenues for Overton Park Zoo were down by more than $21,000 for July and August compared with last year, and hinted the drop may be tied in with the opening of Libertyland this summer.
Wayne Carlisle, acting zoo director, said zoo revenue this July were $62,043 compared with $69,199 fpr Ki;u, 1975 — a loss of $7,156. Revenues for August were down $14,502 — $55,032 compared with $69,534 for August, 1975.
75 years ago — 1951
The hardwood capital of the world moved Monday from Memphis to Chicago. The move is only temporary, however. The occasion is the 54th annual session of the National Hardwood Lumber Association, presided over by Lee Robinson, Mobile, Ala., president, and John W. McClure, executive secretary. Mr. McClure is a former Memphian.
100 years ago — 1926
A standard training school for Sunday School workers will be conducted at Jackson, Tenn., Sept. 26-Oct. 2, it is announced by the Rev. H.W. Williams of Jackson, superintendent of Sunday school work for the Memphis conference. The school will be held under the joint auspices of the Sunday school board of the Memphis conference and the general Sunday school board of the M.E. Church, South.
