The Shelby County Jail is on track to make its deadline for switching to a new method of inmate supervision, a team of jail monitors said in a report filed late Monday. The Oct. 4 deadline affects only the fifth and sixth floors of the downtown jail, where the most peaceful inmates live in dormitory-style housing. The remaining four floors of the jail will switch from individual to direct supervision later.

The Memphis State University String Quartet will open its 11th season Oct. 12 with the first of four free concerts in the campus Music Building's Harris Auditorium. Joining the ensemble for one of the program features, Sketch for Double Quartet by John Lewis, will be the Tommy Ferguson Trio and timpanist
Frank Shaffer. Lewis attained fame as pianist and music director of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
75 years ago — 1951
The Peoples Bank of Whitehaven, newest member of the Barretville Bank & Trust Co. group, will open its doors Saturday in the recently completed building on Highway 51 South leased from County Commission Chairman Hale. H. Leo Brown, a vice president of the Barretville banking group, will be manager at Whitehaven and Woodrow Forbes will be assistant vice president.
100 years ago — 1926
Miss Mary Elizabeth Pearson, 18-year-old daughter of Dr. William A. Pearson, dean of Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, and a sophomore at Swarthmore College, started work the other day as a taxicab driver. Blonde and smiling, Miss Pearson stepped into her cab and began her schedule of a 10-hour working day until the opening of college in October. With the close of summer school of the University of Pennsylvania, where Miss Pearson has been taking several courses, she cast her eyes about for employment. Naturally, she chose the job she liked best — driving.
