Mary Lane Pinckernell, 3½, and her sister, Bailey, 6, played happily in a hallway Sunday in a "magical" new building at Hutchison School in East Memphis. The youngsters and their parents were among several hundred people attending the dedication of Hutchison's $3 million, 21,500-square-foot Early Childhood Building that was built over the summer to serve 3- and 4-year-old girls in prekindergarten and junior kindergarten classes. The building was completed Saturday and children will start classes there this morning when Hutchison begins its school year.
50 years ago — 1976
A prime downtown riverfront site changed hands yesterday when Day Properties Inc. bought the old Swift & Company cold storage-packing plant at 35 Union. The
property, which overlooks Riverside Drive and Memphis' waterfront, will be redeveloped by Day Properties, a Memphis firm headed by wealthy hardwood lumberman Clarence Day. The purchase price was $125,000. . .The project is expected to be a keystone in the proposed redevelopment of the block bounded by Front, Union, Gayoso and Riverside.
75 years ago — 1951
Sixteen Mid-Southerners, all members of the Naval Air Reserve Patrol Squadron 791, received their air crewmen wings yesterday at the Naval Air Reserve Training Unit here. The wings were presented by Lieut. Comdr. Preston W. McDaniel, commanding officer of the squadron. The unit returned here Saturday from Boston after completing its annual two weeks' training duty.
100 years ago — 1926
With the purchase of established produce houses in Clarksdale, Miss., and Blytheville, Ark., D. Canale & Company, Memphis' wholesale produce dealers, announce that they will immediately establish a system of chain wholesale stores for the distribution and collection of produce.
