Election day is near, but before you head to the ballot box, make sure you know where you're going.
The Aug. 6 election will decide new officials local to Memphis and Shelby County, and feature state and federal primary races.
During the early voting period, which ended Aug. 1, voters could go to any location. But on election day, you must vote at your assigned polling place.
Here's everything you need to know to cast your ballot and get your "I voted" sticker.
How do I know if I am registered to vote?
To vote in Tennessee, you must have registered at least 30 days before the election. To confirm your registration status, search the voter lookup page on the Tennessee Secretary of State's website.
Where do I vote?
To vote on election day, you must go to your assigned polling place. To find your assigned voting
location, use the interactive map on the Shelby County Election Commission's website, or search for your precinct by entering your address on the Tennessee Secretary of State's website.
When are polls open?
Polls open at 7 a.m. on election day, Aug. 6. Anyone in line at their polling place by the time polls close — 7 p.m. — will be allowed to cast their vote.
What should I bring with me to vote?
All you need to vote in-person is a photo ID. The Shelby County Election Commission says you can bring any of the following ID types, even if expired:
- Tennessee driver's license with your photo;
- United States passport;
- Photo ID issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security;
- Photo ID issued by the federal or Tennessee state government;
- United States Military photo ID; or
- Tennessee handgun carry permit with your photo.
If you forget to bring your ID to the polls, you can still vote on a provisional ballot, according to the Tennessee Secretary of State's website. This gives you two business days to bring your ID to the election commission office and sign an affidavit, which spurs the counting board to review your ballot.
