Germantown will be losing a staple retailer in the area after less than a decade in business.
The Container Store first opened in the area in September 2019 and has been a go-to destination for home organization ever since, with options for closet remodeling, storage and more at the Germantown location. Now, it will close just seven years after it began.
For Memphis-area shoppers, the next closest The Container Store locations are both roughly three hours away.
Here is what we know about the closure.
Is The Container Store in Germantown closing?
On Sept. 15, The Container Store manager posted on the Germantown TN Resident Bulletin Board group on Facebook that the store would be permanently closing in December.
This closing is not part of the recent trend of mass closures, as the Germantown location
will be the only one to cease operations.
Now through December, the store will offer in-stock items at a 40% discount as part of its closing sale.
When did The Container Store begin?
While the store may be a recent discovery for Memphis residents, it has been around since 1978, when Garrett Boone and John Mullen started it in Dallas. It was among the first stores in a new retail category: home storage and organization.
It soon began expanding in Texas, and recent reports show there are 98 locations in the United States. The only states without a location are Alabama, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.
The Container Store and Bed, Bath & Beyond
In December 2024, The Container Store filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and later emerged as a privately held company after receiving approval for a restructuring plan.
In July 2026, Bed Bath & Beyond acquired The Container Store for $150 million. Following the purchase, all locations were rebranded as The Container Store/Bed Bath & Beyond.
How many Container Stores remain in Tennessee?
After the Germantown location closes in December, the only Container Store remaining in the state will be the Nashville location at 2121 Green Hills Village Dr.
The next closest option for Memphis-area shoppers will be The Container Store is the location in Little Rock.
