More than 75 homeowners attended Monday night's meeting of the Collierville Planning Commission to protest a proposed mini-storage facility next to their subdivisions. Members of the Oakmont
subdivision were joined by homeowners in The Woods, Rolling Oaks, the Meadows and Polo Run in their objection to a proposal to build the Collierville Marketplace Mini-Storage on 5.82 acres at the northwest corner of White Road and Market Boulevard, west of Oakmont.
50 years ago — 1976
The candidates for this year's five-member Memphis State University Homecoming Court include 24 women and one 95-pound dog. The part Labrador retriever and part German Shepherd named Smokey Robertson, lives in the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house on Midland with its co-owner, Johnnie Robertson. Already, Smokey has a campaign manager, a smattering of support and campaign workers who are busy making signs that read "Smoke ain't no joke."
75 years ago — 1951
With the 27-day Crusade for Freedom entering its final two weeks, F. Clyde Lambert, treasurer, yesterday reported "extremely encouraging" progress in the campaign for funds to finance the battle of "Truth against communism." Goal for the campaign is $17,000 and 125,000 enrollment signatures. The drive will continue through Oct. 13 in Memphis and Shelby County.
100 years ago — 1926
Covington High had to hustle yesterday to score a 6-0 victory over Millington High School at Millington. The Shelby County school playing its first game of its first year of football, gave their heavier and more experienced opponents a tussle and Coach Castellaw was well pleased with the Millington eleven even in defeat.
