Construction equipment supplier Thompson Machinery is moving its regional headquarters from Whitehaven to Collierville.
The $84.8 million capital investment by Thompson has been touted by town officials as the largest economic development project in Collierville in more than 20 years.
Currently located on a 21-acre site southeast of Interstate 240 and Elvis Presley Boulevard, the supplier will relocate to a 133-acres between U.S. 72, Tennessee 385 and Sycamore Road in Collierville.
In May 2024, the Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a 15-year retention and expansion payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) program, as recommended by the Collierville Industrial Development Board.
The Collierville Planning Commission during its Oct. 1 meeting
unanimously endorsed several separate items related to the move. The company is required to occupy its new buildings or have the project completed by Dec. 31, 2028.
The proposed headquarters will consist of four primary facilities totaling more than 200,000 square feet, including the main building, rental building, Thompson Energy Solutions (TES) building, and training building. The remaining lots are intended to provide future development opportunities, supporting infrastructure, and long-term flexibility as the campus continues to develop, according to a cover letter.
Asphalt facility approved by Collierville board
The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen during its Sept. 28 meeting approved a conditional use for Standard Construction Co.’s proposed hot mix asphalt facility.
The facility is expected to employ between 7 to 10 people.
The 35-acre asphalt facility site would be located southeast of the intersection of Progress Road and Keough Road, just north of 385.
Under the town’s zoning ordinance, “paving materials manufacturing” requires an approved conditional use permit to operate in a general industrial district.
The proposed facility will supplement production at Standard Construction's existing plant on Frank Road, with an expected maximum output of about 350,000 to 400,000 tons of asphalt per year.
Standard Construction Co. expects to operate from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., five to six days a week, from April through November.
Unlike many traditional asphalt plants, the site would not wash aggregate, which lowers its water demand. The Town of Collierville’s Public Utilities Division has confirmed the water and sewer systems have enough capacity for the use. A water and sewer capacity study would be required if production is expanded. The northern portion of the property is reserved for on-site stormwater detention, which will be reviewed further during the final site plan process.
Germantown to host business event
The City of Germantown’s economic development commission will host the third annual Germantown Business Summit from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 20 at the Great Hall & Conference Center at 1900 S. Germantown Rd.
