The 27th reunion for those who lived in Fort Pickering — a neighborhood demolished decades ago for urban renewal — is set for Sunday. Fort Pickering fans will meet at Chickasaw Par at California and Delaware said L.A. 'Tony' Watts, the old neighborhood's unofficial mayor. Fort Pickering, a 20-square block enclave south of downtown, fell to urban renewal in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
50 years ago — 1976
Mrs. Jane Luchessi, social therapy administrator at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, has been named to a special state committee on child abuse. Funded by a federal grant administered through the Tennessee Department of Human Services, the Comprehensive Emergency Services Child Care Professionals Committee is to recommend
an emergency services plan for children and families involved in child abuse and neglect.
75 years ago — 1951
There will be plenty of entertainment, games and prizes at the seventh annual Shrine Carnival — held for the benefit of the Shrine School for Crippled Children — on the grounds of Al Chymia Temple, 1257 Poplar, today. A tented vaudeville show, amusement rides and an auction of merchandise donated by Memphis firms will be among the attractions, according to James L. Dallas, general chairman.
100 years ago — 1926
Another stop looking to an early beginning of the Harahan viaduct was taken Monday when certain landowners in Crittenden County, Ark., filed a petition in the county court asking that the route be definitely and officially designated on the records. The matter of detail was considered necessary before definite action along this route could begin. The petitioners asked that the highway from the St. Francis levee to the Harahan Bridge, which will be the viaduct, be established over as straight a line as practicable from the point where the concrete road intersects the center line of the levee.
