Federal officials heard complaints from disabled citizens about the Memphis Area Transit Authority at a panel discussion Tuesday morning organized and moderated by U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D-Memphis). Arthur Lopez, director of the office of civil rights at the Federal Transit Administration is meeting this week with MATA officials and groups representing the disabled.
50 years ago — 1976
Graham Central Station, a group that blends rock and soul with four-part harmony, will headline a show Saturday night at the Mid-South Coliseum. B.T. Express, one of the leaders in the current disco rage, will bring its bumpity-bump rhythm to the stage as special guest. Special Delivery will also appear. Larry Graham, a former member of Sly
and the Family Stone, formed a group called "Hot Chocolate" in 1972, which evolved into Graham Central Station in 1973.
75 years ago — 1951
Invading hordes of a vicious army have moved in on a section of Southeast Memphis in what has become known as the "Battle of the Bugs." At a late hour yesterday, residents of the neighborhood reported that the enemy — tentatively identified as the Fall army worm — was rolling unchecked over lawn and limb. Desperate housewives, keeping their children in the comparative safety of homes, mobilized into infantry units to combat the menace with brooms and fly swatters. Husbands mixed strange poison potions with which to bomb the battalions.
100 years ago — 1926
Marion Talley, phenomenal young prima donna of the Metropolitan Opera Company, who starts her fall tour at Ocean Grove, N.J., Aug. 21, will appear at the Auditorium in Memphis on Friday, Sept. 1, on Cortese Brothers late summer programme.
