At a Sept. 4 press conference, Marvel Comics chief operating officer Bill Jemas and editor-in-chief Joe Quesada announced a smoking ban for heroes in their all-ages superhero comics, like Spider-Man and X-Men titles. "We're told that smoking causes cancer," Jemas said, deadpan. "If an artist wants to draw a guy on the street smoking, fine," Quesada clarified. "We just have a problem with Wolverine smoking. It's just a matter of whether we want to promote cancer or not, and quite frankly, I think we're done promoting it."

Ten world champion Tennessee walking horses will perform in Memphis' first Cotton Harvest Classic Wednesday through Saturday at the Germantown Charity Horse Show Arena. Bill Dawson, chairman
of the four-night event for the Memphis Equestrian Association, reported yesterday that among the 10 champions will be Shades of Carbon, the 1976 grand champion.

A meeting to outline the blood donation service and the Civil Defense program available to Memphians will be held in the Nineteenth Century Club auditorium Sept. 27. The meeting, to which all women of the city are invited, is being sponsored by the Civil Defense Departments of the club in cooperation with the Memphis and Shelby County chapter of the American Red Cross.
100 years ago — 1926
Rival tickets will be placed in nomination tonight in the preliminaries of the annual Chamber of Commerce selection. The two nominating committees named 10 days ago will report at a membership meeting of the chamber in Room "A" on the second floor. The reports of the two nominating committees will be the only business transacted.
