LITTLE ROCK — Veterans, firefighters and at least 15 members of the Melvin Guy family of West Memphis plan to ask the Arkansas parole board today to keep Emily Fletcher of Cordova in jail.
Sign-carrying members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving also are expected at this morning's regular meeting of the Post Prison Transfer Board to lobby members to reassess a decision to release Fletcher from prison on Aug. 15.
50 years ago — 1976
CHICAGO — Football games normally are played despite the weather. Occasionally, when the weather is severe enough, they are terminated. The 43rd College All-Star game Friday night produced something new. It was officially terminated with 1:22 remaining in the third quarter because of "rain, wet grounds, fans on the field and no goal posts." Hundreds of spectators swarmed onto the field when time was called.
75 years ago — 1951
The City Government is preparing to go into the bond market to sell a second 1951 issue of city bonds. The money is needed to complete this year's public works program and get the 1952 program under way. Mayor Overton disclosed yesterday that City Comptroller Frank T. Tobey is surveying various departments to determine their needs.
100 years ago — 1926
W.P. Wright is to be the manager of another Mr. Bowers Store which will open this morning on Madison near Crosstown. It is described as the "newest, self-serve store" in the city.
