The musical Purlie was an ambitious undertaking for Germantown Community Theatre, and fortunately, it found the right actors. Surely other theaters in town would love to know where director Gregory K. Krosnes found Melissa VanPelt, who powerfully handles a role that earned singer Melba Moore a Tony Award on Broadway in 1970.
50 years ago — 1976
The Ramada Inn Central/Downtown Memphis has completed a $500,000 renovation and refurbishing program that includes the opening of a new restaurant and disco lounge. "This new Ramada Inn property will bring a beautifully refurbished full-service hotel to the heart of downtown Memphis," said manager Richard Pope. Opened in 1968 as the flagship of the old Downtowner chain, the property was
foreclosed on, after a series of management changes, in December, 1974.
75 years ago — 1951
Atty. Gen. Heiskell made a final appeal last night to "anyone in Memphis with any information whatsoever" that might help the investigation of rumors of immorality at Treadwell School. . .The investigation was prompted by statements of Mrs. Maurine Davis Hayslip, eighth grade teacher at Treadwell School, who charged there was immorality among a group of students at the school. The Memphis Board of Education promptly requested a grand jury investigation.
100 years ago — 1926
"The public be served." These four words have guided the professional career of Ernest Vollrath for 26 years. He is just as convinced of their worth today, his fortieth birthday, as he was when a lad of 14 in Germany, just beginning his long and exacting apprenticeship which fitted him for the proud title, maître d'hotel, in some of the world's most noted hostelries. Mr. Vollrath is just round out his first year of service as maître d'hotel with the Hotel Peabody.
