Dixon Gallery & Gardens Director Kevin Sharp announced his retirement Aug. 13 after 19 years at the helm.
In a letter to Dixon members, Sharp said he believes the public space is now the "best version of itself."
"With your encouragement and support, every aspect of the Dixon is better and stronger than it was two decades ago," Sharp said. "The institution is more accountable, diverse, productive, and resilient than it has ever been ... and it will only become bolder and more vigorous in the years to come."
After almost four decades of working in art museums, Sharp said he decided "it is time to turn this important work over to the next generation" in the letter.
He reflected warmly on his tenure at Dixon, describing his emotions for leaving as "mixed."
"Moving to Memphis has been a joy for Erin and me, and leading the Dixon is one of the best experiences of my professional life," he said. "I am deeply grateful to have had this opportunity, and Erin joins me in thanking you [members] for your generous support. You have made all the difference."
Though the Dixon Board of Trustees has already begun the search for Sharp's successor, he will stay in his position until next summer. "These processes can take time, but we are committed to a smooth and seamless transition," Sharp said in the letter. "Please continue to take care of the Dixon and the excellent work this institution does for the Memphis community and beyond."
The American Alliance of Museums recently visited the gallery for its reaccreditation site visit.
