Capleville United Methodist Church celebrated its 150th anniversary Sunday dedicating new altar kneelers created through a true labor of love. Run your finger across the right thumb and forefinger of Jean Clark and you'll feel callouses formed from countless hours spent doing needlepoint. Needleworker and choir member Cathy Goodwin didn't read a book for two years. Norma Todd jokingly said she almost lost her religion over the tedious work. To create the kneelers for the Southeast Shelby County church, a dedicated group of 20 women pushed and pulled many a needle through the 11 canvasses.

The 120th Mid-South Fair opens today for a nine-day run with its carnival atmosphere happily greeted by brisk fall temperatures
and blue skies. Today's program includes the opening round of Tommy Steiner's World Championship Rodeo in the Mid-South Coliseum and to include an appearance by country singer-songwriter Tom T. Hall.

Uncle Sam aimed another blow at the nation's piggybanks yesterday. In letters to national banks here and elsewhere, a government spokesman urged that every effort be made to get idle pennies and nickels back into circulation. Preston Delano, comptroller of the currency, pointed out that the copper shortage was playing hob with the United States Mint's production of smaller coins.

PHILADELPHIA ‒ With his face beaten into a bloody mask, Jack Dempsey passed the heavyweight championship of the world to Gene Tunney last night at the end of 10 rounds outdoors of fighting that began in a drizzle and wound up in a downpour.
