Hello, Memphis! My name is Ryan Myers, and I’ve started my role as The Commercial Appeal’s full-time high school sports reporter. I am beyond excited to cover such an amazing city full of culture, history, and great sports. I will cover the region with respectful, fact-based journalism. My goal is to tell the stories of the people who make up this community.
Over the coming weeks and months, I’ll be learning every day. Memphis is not a place I grew up or visited as a kid. But I plan to lean into what I don’t know about this city and the people who live here. I want to become a sponge, eager to listen to new perspectives and learn from the people who know Memphis best. The content you will get from me won’t be limited to articles. My versatile background on camera, as well as in shooting and editing video, makes me very excited to continue doing so as time progresses. I plan to post on my social media pages when I’m at events and turn the content I write and create into engaging social media posts to reach as many Memphians as possible.
I grew up in Sterling, Virginia, a suburb of the Washington, D.C., metro area. Sports media was always a passion of mine. Growing up, I played every sport under the sun until I eventually turned my focus toward basketball and golf. I was never good enough to play beyond the varsity level, but I loved every minute of youth sports.
After I graduated from high school in 2022, I moved more than 2,000 miles away to attend Arizona State University, where I majored in journalism and mass communications and minored in Digital audiences.
In Phoenix, I laid the groundwork for who I am as a reporter, honing my skills on air, writing stories, and producing content behind the scenes.
During my upperclassman years at ASU, I worked for an On3 affiliate outlet covering Sun Devil football and men’s basketball.
After I graduated with my Bachelor's degree in May, I interned at The Dallas Morning News, covering sports in one of the nation’s most iconic sports cities.
Outside of journalism, I’m a fan of all things sports, playing soccer, basketball, and golf frequently. I also enjoy video games and going out to experience nightlife, concerts, and other events. The Memphis food scene really excites me, and I'll try just about anywhere, so if you have any restaurant or recipe recommendations, please reach out to me on X or by email. I will go; I mean it.
I can’t wait to immerse myself in this community. On Friday, I attended Whitehaven's 43-28 win over Houston, and I had a blast. I’d only been in Memphis for a few hours, but the lively atmosphere of Friday night lights captivated me from the start.
