The Memphis in May International Festival has announced that veteran Bluff City arts executive John Doyle has joined the organization as vice president of programming.
In September, Doyle announced his departure from the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, where he served as executive director for the past 23 years.
According to a statement from Memphis in May, in his role as vice president of programming, Doyle "will coordinate the festival’s marketing and help plan and coordinate current and future events and programming" for the festival.
This marks Doyle’s return to Memphis in May, where he previously served in the same role from 1999
to 2003, before joining Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul.
“Our organization’s Board and Staff are excited to bring John and his talents back to the Memphis in May International Festival,” said Mack Weaver, Memphis in May president and CEO.
“He brings unique and impressive skills in marketing, museum exhibits, cultural and special events programming, and fiscal responsibility that can help us continue to grow this festival for our citizens’ benefit for the next 50 years.”
Doyle added: “I’m excited to return to the staff of the Memphis in May International Festival, which I consider to be one of our city’s greatest cultural assets. I’m incredibly impressed by the current staff’s dedication and commitment, under the leadership of Mack Weaver, to sustain, grow and further nurture its signature events for our city and its citizens.”
The Memphis in May International Festival hosts the annual World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest (established in 1978) and the Great American River Run (established in 2015). The organization is expected to announce plans and details for its 2027 events in the coming weeks.
