It's still early, but the TSSAA football season is beginning to take shape in the Memphis area after Week 2 brought close finishes, blowouts and a few surprises.
Now, Week 3 arrives with a clearer picture
of where programs stand. Here is a look at the top games in the Memphis area.
Game of the week
Southwind (2-0) at Houston (1-1)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
The Jaguars rolled past Ridgeway 63-0 in the Week 2 game of the week. Auburn commitment and Dandy Dozen selectionKhamoni Williams led Southwind with three rushing touchdowns. Houston fell short in a 43-28 road loss to Whitehaven, but its 40-6 win over Germantown in Week 1 showed the Mustangs’ talent.
Ryan Myers' prediction: Southwind 35, Houston 28
Horn Lake, Mississippi (0-1) at Collierville (0-2)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
The combined record does not reflect the quality of these programs. Both teams have played competitive schedules and shown upside early in the season. Horn Lake lost 23-16 in overtime to Center Hill in Week 1, while Collierville has opened the season against marquee opponents. The Dragons lost to East Nashville, ranked No. 18 in the latest Nashville area Super 25 and fell to Oxford, ranked No. 2 in the Mississippi statewide Super 25.
Myers' prediction: Collierville 27, Horn Lake 14
Lausanne (0-1) at Christian Brothers (2-0)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
Nate Brick completed 9-of-21 passes for 109 yards in Christian Brothers' 19-7 win over White Station last week. Lausanne nearly completed a comeback against Southwind in its season opener, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter. Wide receiver Lawrence Britt, a Dandy Dozen selection and Missouri commitment, ran for two touchdowns.
Myers' prediction: Lausanne 42, Christian Brothers 21
Briarcrest (2-0) at Ensworth (2-0)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
Led by the offensive trio of Octavius Flynn, Cayden Dixon and Caden Sage, Briarcrest has gotten off to a rapid start, winning its first two games by 37 and 49 points, respectively. The Saints' third game of the season, however, will likely come with more resistance. Ensworth knocked off Whitehaven 24-8 in Week 1 and improved to 2-0 after defeating Nashville Christian on Aug. 28.
Myers' prediction: Ensworth 21, Briarcrest 17
DeSoto Central, Mississippi (1-0) at Lake Cormorant, Mississippi (1-0)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
This north Mississippi clash will be an exciting Week 2 matchup. DeSoto Central needed 15 fourth-quarter points to defeat South Panola, 26-25, last week while Lake Cormorant defeated PURE Academy, 27-8, to open its season slate. Friday's matchup is the second of three straight home games for Lake Cormorant.
Myers' prediction: DeSoto Central 35, Lake Cormorant 27
Memphis Central (2-0) at White Station (1-1)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
Memphis Central has outscored opponents 86-0 through the first two weeks of the season, scoring over 40 points in both games. A road game at White Station, however, will offer a difficult challenge. The Spartans lost 19-7 to CBHS, but Timmie Robertson's 71 yards of total offense was a positive sign.
Myers' prediction: White Station 21, Memphis Central 20
Bartlett (1-1) at Melrose (1-1)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
Melrose bounced back after losing 42-0 in Week 1, knocking off Kirby 30-19 in Week 2. Still, Bartlett is likely the favorite in the matchup. It visits Melrose after losing 20-13 to Germantown on Aug. 28
Myers' prediction: Bartlett 44, Melrose 13
Fairley (1-1) at Whitehaven (1-1)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
Fairley has a tough act to follow as it attempts to defeat Whitehaven on the road. Houston failed to overcome a potent run game from the Tigers. Fairley is also attempting to bounce back after a 55-6 loss to Bartlett, so expect a motivated showcase from the visitors Friday.
Myers' prediction: Whitehaven 38, Fairley 27
Kirby (1-1) at MUS (1-1)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
MUS responded to its season opening loss to Bartlett by thumping Northpoint Christian 41-6 in Week 2. It's used a two-QB system with Cullen Hayden and Dhilan Madasu who have combined for 269 yards passing and three TDs.
Myers' prediction: MUS 40, Kirby 17
Sheffield (0-2) at Germantown (0-2)
When: 7 p.m. | Sept. 4
Sheffield has lost 13 straight games dating back to the 2024 season. It was 0-10 last year and is looking to snap that streak against a Germantown team that watched a lot of its players transfer out of the program prior to Red Devils coach Gene Robinson's departure.
Myers' prediction: Germantown 35, Sheffield 0
