Basketball figures heavily in the five-day camp hosted by Youth Education through Sports, but the organization insists athletics are secondary. . .The camp is the first of many projects the organization plans in an effort to "give back to the community." YES, formed this year by a group of businessmen and University of Memphis men's basketball coach John Calipari, began its "School of Life" camp Sunday. The free camp shows city school youths that academics are just as important as athletics.

Formal invitations have been sent to Summit Club members by Alvin Tate, president, inviting them to a champagne reception prior to the much-anticipated opening of the new Summit Club East in the Clark Tower. The party
in the new facilities will take place Saturday, Aug. 21, and Sunday, Aug. 22. The new club on the 33rd floor of the building will be officially opened to members and guests for luncheon and dinner Aug. 23.
75 years ago — 1951
Polio under treatment in Memphis swung upward yesterday with diagnosis of seven new cases at Isolation Hospital. The new cases raise the total being treated there to 43, with 32 of the victims from Memphis and Shelby County. Dr. L.M. Graves, head of the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department, said the number is "a little unusual, but not particularly alarming from the epidemic standpoint unless such a rate continues."

The Woman's Missionary Society of First Methodist Church will have its August business meeting tomorrow afternoon at the residence of Mrs. Casa Collier. Every member is urged to be present, as this will be the only meeting during August.
