A Collierville special meetingto discuss the "employment status" of the city's Fire and Rescue Chief John Selberg has been rescheduled from Aug. 14.
According to a noon press release from the city, the discussion will take place before the Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen at a new date yet to be determined.
"We understand that in the absence of detailed public information, speculation can arise; however,the Town is committed to handling this matter with the objective professionalism and due process that our employeesand residents deserve," the release stated.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen instead held a closed attorney client privilege
consultation on the same day.
The moved date will allow "both parties to meet a resolution," according to the release.
Jennifer Preston, public information officer for Town of Collierville, told The Commercial Appeal that "everyone involved in the matter" has more to discuss, including town staff that are involved and Selberg's legal representation.
Selberg was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 11 due to a "personnel matter," in which the town has not revealed details.
The Collierville Fire Department and all its emergency services continue to operate without interruption.
Background as chief
Selberg has been the Collierville fire chief since being appointed by the board in April 2022.
He replaced former fire chief Buddy Billings that year. Under Selberg’s helm, Collierville opened the 16,000-square-foot, two-story Collierville Fire Station No. 6 at 11670 E. Shelby Drive in December 2025.
The firehouse also houses Shelby County’s first Safe Haven Baby Box, available as a 24/7 anonymous resource for mothers in crisis.
Selberg — who has more than 40 years of experience working in the fire department — began his career as a volunteer firefighter in 1977 in Germantown. Selberg served as the Germantown fire chief for 11 years before taking the same role in Collierville.
He also served as Germantown Fire Department’s lieutenant, battalion chief and fire marshal.
