The Baptist Heart Institute, a three-story building designed to showcase the Mid-South health giant's cardiovascular services, will host an opening ceremony today. The opening, which will include public tours, comes nearly four years after Baptist Memorial Health Care Corp. officials outlined plans for a multimillion dollar East Memphis expansion.
50 years ago — 1976
Ken Cooper, Ole Miss' football coach, isn't the only one who wishes the score had been different between the Rebels and Memphis State. Paul 'Bear' Bryant is another. Bryant, coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Rebs' opponent Saturday night in Jackson, Miss., admitted yesterday he would have preferred that Ole Miss had won the game with the Tigers in Liberty Bowl
Memorial Stadium this past Saturday. But instead, the Rebs, in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated, lost their 1976 season opener, 21-16.
75 years ago — 1951
Two Mid-South born officials of the Memphis Assembly Plant of the Ford Motor Co. yesterday received promotions to high-ranking posts it was announced by Harold J. Pearson, plant manager. David A. Clark of Memphis was moved up from general production superintendent to assistant plant manager. Mr. Clark, 47, was born at Dancyville, Tenn., and rose through the ranks of the paint and trim department. Earl B. Lamar, 44, who hails from New Albany, Miss., became general production superintendent yesterday. Mr. Lamar joined the firm in 1929 as a painter.
100 years ago — 1926
This is Labor's Day — a day of rest and recreation, and Memphis organized labor has planned one of its greatest outings at which it is expected that thousands will be present to join in the merriment of the occasion and to spend the day in good fellowship. The celebration today will be held at Harbin's picnic grounds. Plans have been completed to get the crowds to the grounds from the car lines without additional cost, and ticket holders will find free bus service awaiting them when they leave the street cars. Tickets are good to all amusements, including swimming and dancing.
