After her son was born at a Memphis hospital this month, Brenda Elzie hewed to a time-honored practice and saved the newspaper birth announcement, which she had welcomed as a means of spreading the word of her new arrival. Beginning Wednesday, however, most local residents will have to get word out themselves about their newborns. Shelby County hospitals will stop providing birth information to area newspapers. Hospital administrators cited patient safety, primarily fear of infant abductions, as the reason for ending the historic practice.
50 years ago — 1976
Ten years ago, it took a concerned 13-year-old boy to get something done about the neglect of the Memphis Belle. The history of this World War II relic is one of neglect.
Now the problem is what to do with the famed but aging B17 and who will refurbish it. A parking garage will rise where the Belle now stands at Central and Hollywood. Whatever is decided, let the main elements of the decision be that the Memphis Belle will be faithfully maintained and protected from vandals, and that it be placed in a public place where the multitudes will pass — without having to pay to see.
75 years ago — 1951
CAMP PICKWICK, Tenn. ‒ Joyous laughter, mixed with squeals of delight, has upset the customary quiet of Pickwick hills, as 84 Memphis girls go about enjoying two weeks in the great outdoors. From the city's crowded living districts, these girls, between the ages of 9 and 13, were selected by welfare agencies to attend this YMCA camp on scholarships furnished by The Commercial Appeal's Fresh Air Fund.
100 years ago — 1926
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Henry Lake and children Laura and Richard Jr., will sail today for Glasgow from Quebec.
