Election officials agree that it's a good idea to issue a more modern, technology-friendly voter registration card, but they're at odds over the timetable on distributing the cards. The five-member commission is split on how to issue those new cards — in phases over a year's time starting in October or all at once next year in time for the November 2002 state and federal general elections.

Memphis Education Association and city school system negotiators met for more than three hours yesterday but there appeared to be no significant movement toward settlement of the teacher pay raise dispute. The bargaining talks were recessed until Tuesday, only two days before teachers have scheduled a mass meeting to consider
"drastic action" if no agreement is reached. MEA leaders have said a strike is a "growing possibility."
75 years ago — 1951
Four more officers and airmen of the 516th Troop Carrier Wing at Municipal Airport have been ordered to enbarkation points for overseas duty. Capt. Hollis W. Russell, maintenance officer in the Maintenance Squadron, will report to Camp Kilmer, N.J., for probable shipment to the European theater. Bound for Camp Stoneman, Calif., are Second Lieut. William L. Doyle Jr., adjutant of the Air Police Squadron; Corp. Marvin Polsky of the Medical Group, and Pfc Stanley M. Levitch of the 345th Troop Carrier Squadron.
100 years ago — 1926
An impromptu frolic programme was broadcast from WMC late last night under the supervision of Harry O. Nichols, Strand Theater organist, the entertainment being substituted for an organ recital at the last moment. On the programme were piano solos by Mr. Nichols, Mike Fitzpatrick and Wally Allen, manager of the Majestic Theater; songs by Mrs. A.B. McHenry and several fine flute solos by Homer Gentry, who will open at the Strand next week with his own orchestra.
