Everything is set for the Shelby County wheel tax increase to go into effect with October auto license tag renewals and new registrations, county officials said Monday. The increase cannot be avoided by paying early, said County Clerk Jayne Creson, whose office collects the tax.

Jack McConnell is one person who should be happy that hats are back in style. But as far as McConnell is concerned, they never went out.. The New York hat designer, who is originally from Mooresville, Tenn., has been in business for more than 30 years. When hats went out of the picture several years ago and many top designers threw in the towel, McConnell hung in there. "I did what I felt was right," said McConnell, who is in town
on a 31-city swing around the country. He is making an appearance at Goldsmith's downtown store through today.

NASHVILLE ‒ Probability of the six-year-old litigation of the Memphis Street Railway Company and the City of Memphis on the company's rate base being compromised was in the air today. It is known that there is a general desire now to accept the $10,600,000 valuation set six years ago. Acceptance of this amount is said to be agreeable to city officials of Memphis, the street car company and members of the utilities commission who fixed the valuation.
