Shelby County Schools won't be filling 19 elementary and middle school teaching positions in art, music and PE this year, the first of what officials said could be "real" cuts on the horizon. County schools, which may be looking at a $15 million budget shortfall when classes resume Monday, will save about $800,000 in salaries and benefits through attrition.

The time clock installed in the property assessor's office by George LaManna to keep track of his employees is coming down. "That's definitely going," said William C. Boyd, who will move across the Mid-America Mall Sept. 1 from his City Hall office to the office held 16 years by LaManna. Along with the time clock will go the trademark of the assessor's office:
LaManna's stormy temper and unabashed grandstanding. In 4½ years as City Hall's public service director, Boyd was never once accused of being colorful.

Followers of hunting and fishing in Memphis are looking ahead to two events of major importance that come to pass within a week. Top billing goes to the Sportsmen's Rally, scheduled at Rainbow Lake on Highway 78, next Thursday afternoon, for the outsdoorsmen will gather there to the tune of thousands. The other event, the Southern Fly and Bait Casting Tournament, which gets underway at Overton Park tomorrow morning, is of prime interest to that select group of anglers, and will attract casting stars from a dozen Southern cities.
100 years ago — 1926
RIDGELY, Tenn. ‒ A new road has recently been surveyed and is now under construction extending due west from tank No. 2 to Powell's Ferry on the Mississippi River. This road is eight miles in length and connects with Highway No. 78 at tank No. 2, which is two miles south of Ridgely, reducing the mileage from Ridgely to Caruthersville, Mo., from 15 to 10 miles.
