WASHINGTON ‒ In a time of war — and this appears to be one of sorts — Congress bears special responsibilities. One is to fund the effort. That started last week with the $40 billion lawmakers approved for anti-terrorist activities and rescue and rebuilding measures in New York and at the Pentagon. Another is to give the President the necessary and appropriate authority to act militarily overseas. That has been done. Yet another is to remain calm and resolute.
50 years ago — 1976
The work which opened last night at Circuit Playhouse, "Find Your Way Home," by British writer John Hopkins, is a case history of abnormal male sexual behavior but it is casually gussied up to be billed as a play. It is about as tasteful as an overlong-delayed
autopsy, and as theater it is about that exciting. Interest wanes quickly. The most intriguing aspect is why this pathetic offal was countenanced by director Gene Crain and his cast of four — experienced theater folk all and from the previous work presumed to be perceptive.
75 years ago — 1951
Two representatives from the Lamar Terrace Civic Club will be named to enter the "Miss Fire Prevention" contest at a meeting to be held tomorrow at Lamar Terrace Auditorium. The meeting, first of the Fall season, will also hear a review of the group's plans for the coming months in connection with area projects.
100 years ago — 1926
Marie Marquette, defending the title she won last year, will meet Mrs. Frank C. Lee in the championship round of the singles competition of the city women's tennis tournament tomorrow at Beauregard Field. Miss Marquette and Mrs. Lee advanced to the finals yesterday by winning their semifinal matches in straight sets.
