As the cost of living continues to rise nationally, a new study focuses on where shoppers in Tennessee can save the most on groceries.
Newsweek recently released a study based on data from the Freedom Debt Relief program, which found that grocery shoppers in many states pay more than 50% extra for the same items at a higher-priced supermarket instead of the cheapest option.
To identify the cheapest and most expensive major grocery chain in each state, Freedom Debt Relief used Consumer Reports’ 2026 grocery price comparison, which ranked retailers against Walmart based on the cost of a comparable basket of common groceries.

Aldi was the least
expensive grocery store across 32 states, including Tennessee. Conversely, Whole Foods was the most expensive grocery store in Tennessee and in 43 other states.
According to the study, customers in California, Florida, Illinois, and Texas who shopped at Whole Foods spent 52.3% more than if they bought the same products at Aldi.
These huge gaps exist for several reasons: discount grocers like Aldi and Lidl keep prices lower through private-label products, smaller selections, and leaner stores, according to Freedom Debt Relief, while premium grocers like Whole Foods tend to cost more due to organic, specialty, and service-led offerings.
