Memphis City Court officials say last week's state Supreme Court decision affirming a $50 cap on municipal court fines may change the way the courts handle speeding tickets in construction zones and other tickets to which penalties can be attached. The state's highest court ruled Tuesday that municipal courts may not levy fines of more than $50 when the fine is intended primarily as punishment.
50 years ago — 1976
Ruby Malone is an artist in color. She could have ended up with a gosh awful mess on her hands, but she didn't. Rather she has created outside her small frame home along rural Highway 7, a mile north of Abbeville, Miss., an unusual and attractive blend of colors using growing flowers, a few artificial posies and some
greenery, intensified by an orange and white striped background. The background? Ruby Malone has painted the front of her house in alternating orange and white stripes. "It just came to me and I followed my mind," she explains.
75 years ago — 1951
An army of feathered farmhands in Mississippi County, Ark., whose number this year is estimated by County Agent Keith Bilbrey of Blytheville at 30,000 to 35,000, is just now winding up another season's work in the cotton fields — their most successful season in 25 years, he says. They are geese and, despite the derogatory idiom which labels their breed as being "as silly as a goose," they've got plenty to quack about, Mr. Bilbrey declares. Probably no other flock has been more successful except, possibly, the one which saved Rome with its cackling.
100 years ago — 1926
Art will be prominently featured at the Tri-State Fair Sept. 25-Oct.2. One of the outstanding exhibits in the Woman's Building will be the famous painting, "The Village Blacksmith," by Herbert de Mareau. This remarkable canvas is seven-by-eight feet and portrays with lifelike distinctness a blacksmith shop with the brawny smith standing by his forge the white heat reflected on his forehead, and his silver hair, and his sinewy arms rosy in the leaping firelight.
