University of Memphis basketball coach John Calipari was on the road Thursday, but he said developments within his team this week mean he will spend more time than usual with his players
in the preseason. Earlier this week, junior point guard Courtney Trask left the team, and Calipari said Thursday that senior forward John Grice would be academically ineligible for at least the first semester.
50 years ago — 1976
County Court members yesterday approved a joint court-City Council public hearing on consolidation of the two governments. The resolution authorized court Chairman Charles R. Perkins to meet with council Chairman Oscar Edmonds and schedule the hearing. A special committee, headed by Squire Walter Lee Bailey Jr., met earlier with Mayor Wyeth Chandler and county Mayor Roy Nixon before requesting the hearing.
75 years ago — 1951
Union Avenue Baptist Church has for the second time in three years blocked an attempt by other property owners to permit erection of apartments and shops on both sides of Union east of Cooper to near East Parkway. The successful fight before the Planning Commission was waged practically single-handed by J. Kirk Graves, real estate and insurance man, who is a deacon and trustee of the church at the southeast corner of Union and Summitt. The hearing was held Wednesday.
100 years ago — 1926
COVINGTON, Tenn. ‒ The board of mayor and aldermen met tonight in the courthouse, in accordance with published notices in the Covington Leader to property owners affected, to take final action on the proposed paving of certain streets and parts of street, were specified in ordinances passed July 20, and to hear and pass upon the protests of any property owners affected.
