Shelby County's monthly fire fees on homes in unincorporated areas have gone up $2.50 for the third year in a row. The combined increase over the three-period represents a 62.5 percent increase. The latest increase, which was included on utility bills sent out in July, boosts the monthly residential fee to $19.50. The fees rose to $22.54 for churches and $37.55 for agricultural sites.

Funds have been approved for the construction of the 283-unit, 10-story housing for the elderly tower on the grounds of the St. Peter Home for Children at 1805 Poplar. Confirmation by the Department of Housing and Urban Development of the final 183 units total package was received at the Catholic Diocese of Memphis late this
week.

Who wants to keep the Courthouse closed on Saturdays throughout the year? "Not I," Said Mayor Overton. "Count me out on that," said County Commissioner Hale. . .The city and county offices in the Courthouse and elsewhere have been closed on Saturdays since early June and will be through Saturday, Sept. 29. After that the Courthouse offices will be open until noon on Saturdays, with half the employees off all day each Saturday.

Working on the theory that 80 percent of human tuberculosis is the result of the diseased cow, county health officials have announced a quarantine against cattle from other counties in the state until they have been given a clean bill of health. "We have completed a 15-month examination of 40,000 cattle in the county," Dr. H.C. Cram of the county board of health, said last night. "There are about 3,000 more in the city and county to be examined."
