Their names rarely make the news. They are the ones who crawl through burning homes and buildings. The Memphis Fire Department honored 24 unsung heroes — 22 firefighters and paramedics and two citizens — Monday afternoon during this year's annual memorial service and medals of distinction ceremony at the City Council chambers. . .Medals of Heroism went to Pvts. Barron Erby and James Voelker.
50 years ago — 1976
Bishop Carroll T. Dozier of the Catholic Diocese of Memphis will be host for the first meeting of the new Memphis Ministers' Association Wednesday at his home. The group will meet the second Wednesday of each month, with a different denomination as host for each meeting.
75 years ago — 1951
A vivid lesson on smoking in bed
will highlight a demonstration with aerial ladders by the Fire Department this afternoon in front of Perel & Lowenstein Inc., at 114 South Main. It is being held in connection with Fire Prevention Week, which closes Saturday night. M.C. Meeks, city fireman, will slide down a 60-foot rope as if he were escaping from a burning building. Mr. Meeks will be dressed in a suit depicting a skeleton and will carry a sign stating "I smoked in Bed."
100 years ago — 1926
RIPLEY, Tenn. ‒ Yesterday was a big day for Ripley and Lauderdale County, the occasion being the Lauderdale County Agricultural Fair, which was held in the courthouse and the courtyard. The weather was ideal and the crowd was large, especially in the afternoon. The exhibits were not so elaborate as last year, although the quality of the products shown was better than previous seasons.
