LITTLE ROCK ‒ Divorced mother Theresa Caldwell on Friday asked other mothers — and custodial fathers — to help her gather evidence on Arkansas' overdue child support cases. The Little Rock lawyer is representing nine single mothers whose child support checks have been delayed since late June. She filed suit against the Huckabee administration last week to force the state to comply with federal law in processing court-ordered child support checks.

County Mayor Roy Nixon yesterday announced the appointment of Tom Jones as director of the county information department. Jones, 28, a reporter for the Memphis Press-Scimitar, will be paid $19,800 annually in the position, effective Sept. 20. The department will include
a new complaint center.

NASHVILLE ‒ State Institutions Commissioner Houston Brown said Friday that Tennessee needs two additional institutions for mental patients. One should be built in West Tennessee and the other in Chattanooga, he said. He did not specify any particular point in West Tennessee.

Protests registered with the Interstate Commerce Commission against fertilizer rates to, from and between points in Mississippi will be thoroughly sifted at a hearing which opens in Memphis today. The hearing will before a special examiner representing I.C.C The case is one of several months' standing, Little Rock complaining that the Mississippi rates are too low. As cotton seed and cotton seed products move on fertilizer rates in Mississippi, the interests of that state are said to be seriously involved.
