Shelby County Commissioner charged with vandalism days after election

Shelby County Commissioner Erika Sugarmon has been charged with vandalism, Shelby County court records show.

The Shelby County criminal justice portal had two active cases against Sugarmon as of Aug. 10. She is slated to be arraigned on Aug. 11 for both cases.

Court records did not say why Sugarmon was charged. One case showed four counts of vandalism worth $1,000 or less, and the other case showed one count of the same charge.

Vandalism worth less than $1,000 is a Class A misdemeanor in Tennessee.

The Shelby County District Attorney's Office did not immediately respond to questions about Sugarmon's charges.

Both cases say the vandalism charge stemmed from an April 30 incident, just days before the Shelby County primary elections. Sugarmon, a Democrat,

was up for reelection this year. She won both her primary and general election.

Records show Sugarmon was booked on Aug. 7, the day after she won the general election to regain her Commission seat.

Sugarmon is in the final days of her first term in office. When she is sworn in for her second term on September 1, she will have another four years in office.
