Stephen Kabakos of Ontario proved to be most Kingly during the 15th annual Images of the King (formerly Images of Elvis) Saturday night at the Holiday Inn Select. As a winner of the Elvis Presley impersonation contest, Kabakos can no longer enter Images competitions. He won $1,000.
50 years ago — 1976
A passing reference to five members of the United States' 1976 Olympic team who were on the podium left no doubt about whom a crowd estimated at 3,000 had come to see last night at Mid-South Coliseum ceremonies preceding today's opening here of the National Junior Olympics. A spontaneous, standing ovation from the 2,500 assembled athletes and the rest of the crowd interrupted the routine introduction of Amateur Athletic Union officials
and special guests and transformed the proceedings into a happening for the keyed-up, young athletes representing every state in the union.
75 years ago — 1951
Memphians racked up a new record yesterday as the mobile unit of the Mid-South Defense Blood Center at 635 Monroe visited Goldsmith's and came away with 125 pints of the life-giving fluid being collected for overseas use. That was 23 pints more than the previous high of 102 recorded July 12.
100 years ago — 1926
Excursion trains operated out of Memphis yesterday drew many vacation travelers. The Missouri Pacific carried three extra Pullman cars, well filled, to points in Texas on the Sunshine Special. The Southern operated four extra sleeping cars to points in North Carolina, with all lowers and uppers filled, according to Division Passenger Agent C.C. Stewart. The Southern will operate an excursion train to Chattanooga and run as second section of the Memphis Special. The Frisco carried 100 Memphians to Florida on its Kansas City-Florida Special and Sunnyland yesterday. This morning the Kansas City-Florida Special will be run out of Memphis in two sections, one train being loaded with westerners, Florida bound.
