U.S. News & World Report has released its 2026-27 hospital rankings, featuring a few in the Memphis metro area.
Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis was ranked first in the Memphis metro area and second in Tennessee. Baptist received a high-performing designation in 19 procedures or conditions, including back surgery and colon cancer surgery.
Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven was ranked third in the Memphis metro and second in Mississippi, and was marked high-performing in six procedures and conditions.
Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare adult hospitals were ranked second in the Memphis metro area and third in Tennessee. Referred to as Methodist Hospitals of Memphis in the report, the system received high-performing designation in three specialties
and 16 procedures or conditions, including hip replacement and heart failure procedures.
Methodist was also highlighted as a best regional hospital for community access, according to Chelsey Wen, an analyst at U.S. News & World Report. That's a designation given to high-performing hospitals that provide a lot of their care to underserved populations.
There were only 73 hospitals in the country that received that designation, Wen said.
UTHSC to get $2.4 million in research grants
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center will receive $2.4 million from the National Institutes of Health to support various health research efforts, Congressman Steve Cohen announced July 30.
The money is spread across four grants with different research objectives.
One grant will fund research into a species of fungi most responsible for invasive mold infections in immunocompromised individuals. Another will focus on breast cancer research to develop new classes of drugs that avoid drug resistance. The third grant will study heart function in aging, and the fourth will explore complications from asphyxia in newborn babies.
The money is a "major investment" in the medical school, Cohen said in the announcement.
