The Memphis Grizzliesare waiving guard Walter Clayton Jr. and wing Micah Peavy, according to multiple reports on Oct. 19.
With Oct. 19 being the final day to cut down rosters, the Grizzlies had to make two moves. Waiving Clayton and Peavy finalizes the 2026-27 roster at the start of the season.
Peavy was acquired in a Sept. 8 trade with the New Orleans Pelicans. The Grizzlies wanted to get a look at him in training camp, but an ankle injury resulted in him not being available for the four preseason games.
Memphis acquired Clayton ahead of the 2026 trade deadline. He played in 24 games with the Grizzlies last season, totaling 9.7 points and 5.7 assists per game while shooting 36.6% from the field.
Clayton was drafted 18th overall in the 2025 draft.
Memphis was viewed as a change of scenery after Clayton's stint with the Utah Jazz, but the Grizzlies have decided to go in another direction after he failed to separate himself in a crowded point guard room during the preseason.
Memphis now has 15 players on standard contracts. Teams are also allowed to keep three players on two-way deals. Jahmai Mashack, Javon Small and Carson Cooper occupy those three spots.
The Grizzlies also selected Richie Saunders with the No. 32 overall pick. He remains unsigned while recovering from a February ACL injury suffered at BYU.
Memphis will open the season on Oct. 21 against the Utah Jazz (7 p.m. CT, DAZN-MEM).
