Attending an earthquake seminar in Birmingham left Horn Lake Mayor Mike Thomas all shook up. The mayor was so moved by the message he heard at the conference earlier this week that he's decided the city needs to spend more money to prepare for a major quake. As a result, Thomas is preparing a revised budget for the upcoming fiscal year calling for about $71,000 in spending for generators, barricade materials, placards, signs and forms.
50 years ago — 1976
Hebe shared Court Square yesterday with 12 barber chairs, a country rock band and some o the city's most energetic young hair stylists. The 100-year-old statue has seen plenty of changes since the coming of the Mid-America Mall, but nothing like the assortment of streamers,
scissors and styling equipment that surrounded her fountain yesterday. The occasion was the grand finale of the Memphis Style-A-Thon, part of a national fundraising effort to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

75 years ago — 1951
The West Tennessee Sportsmen's Association was host to 2,500 outdoorsmen and their wives at its third annual Rally at Rainbow Lake on Highway 78 yesterday afternoon. Many of the state's outstanding sportsmen and conservationists were on hand for the occasion, which included the Tennessee State Duck Calling Championship and, apparently, a good time was had by all.
100 years ago — 1926
Colin C. Clements, former director of the Santa Barbara Art Theater, will be the director of the Memphis Little Theater this year. Such announcement was made yesterday by Mrs. Allison Davant, president of the Memphis Little Theater.
