Three people have been indicted in connection to a 6-year-old's death on a Memphis daycare's van, the Shelby County District Attorney's office said on Sept. 11.
Winter Jones, the 6-year-old, was found unresponsive inside a van at Kid University, a daycare located at 771 Walnut Knoll Ln. in Cordova, on Aug. 13. It was 95 degrees that day, with a heat index of 103, according to the National Weather Service in Memphis.
Tametria Norry, the van driver, Sabrina Powe, assistant director of Kid University, and Amilya Hardin, an assistant at the daycare, were each indicted, the DA's office said in a press release. They each face one count of aggravated child neglect, criminally negligent homicide and destruction of and tampering with governmental records.
"Following Winter’s death, the Tennessee Department of Human Services conducted a fatality inspection at Kid University and found the daycare noncompliant with several transportation requirements," the DA's office said in a statement. "Among the findings, inspectors reported that required vehicle inspection procedures were not completed after children were unloaded, the transportation log was not accurately completed, and required walk-throughs to confirm all children were off the vehicle were not conducted."
Memphis police were called to the daycare shortly after 3 p.m. on Aug. 13 after an ambulance responded to the scene.
"Upon arrival, officers found a young girl in need of medical assistance. She was transported to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced deceased," MPD said in a statement.
