Christ the King Lutheran Church held several services during the week after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. But a daylong prayer vigil, scheduled before the attacks for Oct. 13, has taken on added significance. The vigil, which runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., is part of the church's capital fund drive. Beth Lynn, chairman of the prayer chain, is enlisting members of the church to serve as prayer leaders for one hour during the vigil.
50 years ago — 1976
HENDERSON, Tenn. ‒ The latest in a series of "Walking Tall" movies about the life and career of former McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser opens as an elderly woman is thrown down a well by one of her country-bumpkin sons. She is saved by the sheriff, of course.
The star of the scene is a Memphis actress, Mrs. Lucille Ewing, who almost turned down the role of Hetty because it required removal of her dentures during the filming sessions. . .It was the first day of filming for Bing Crosby Productions' third Pusser film, "Final Chapter — Walking Tall."
75 years ago — 1951
Of all the people in Memphis who regularly attend the movies, Dr. Nils Lofgren probably has the most unusual reason. Dr. Lofgren, a Swedish chemist with an international reputation, attends theaters nightly "just to learn your language." Dr. Lofgren is a new member of the staff of the Division of Chemistry of the University Medical Units. While the chemist speaks Swedish, German and English, he has discovered the language of America to be vastly different from that of the British Isles. "If I did not learn your idiom, I am afraid of what would happen when a student asked me a question," he said.
100 years ago — 1926
"The only salvation I see for Memphis, the only salvation for First Church, the only salvation for your home and mine is moral revolution," Dr. Clovis Chappell declared in his sermon at First Methodist Church yesterday morning. Sermon and service were broadcast over WMC, radio station of The Commercial Appeal. An unseen audience as well as a congregation heard Dr. Chappell challenge the forces of Christianity to sweep back the tide of worldliness and carelessness, which he said are abroad today.
