DeSoto County Board of Supervisors launched the first round of cuts Tuesday on an $81.2 million budget proposal, slicing almost $640,000 from the DeSoto County Sheriff Department's budget and cutting $125,000 that had been allocated to operate a proposed horse arena. . .Despite cuts in the sheriff's budget, county residents might face a slight tax increase if the budget is adopted in its current form.

Dick Thornton, who has spent the last two months as athletic director and football coach at Southwestern, has added another line to his biography. Some of Thornton's past handles have been poet and author, travel consultant, television personality, sports writer and professional football player in the Canadian
Football League and defunct World Football League with the Memphis Grizzlies. A booster club, season tickets, soccer and yoga are all part of Thornton's plan to integrate the athletic department with the rest of the Southwestern community.
75 years ago — 1951
W.E. (Billy) Buxton is Memphis' new skeet champion. His unerring gun broke 98 targets out of 100 tries for a five-way tie, then 75 straight without a miss in a shoot-off for the big honor. Buxton succeeds Dudley Forsmark as the titleholder. The crown was decided Monday at the Memphis Skeet Club.
100 years ago — 1926
Mrs. John Loch, chairman of dramatic features for the Woman's Board of the Tri-State Fair, will present 1926 tri-state winners in an expression contest on the evening of Oct. 1. The contest last year, the first of its kind ever held at a fair, proved to be the outstanding entertainment of the programme, with Mississippi's contestant the winner. Miss Mary Parker of Nashville, Miss Minnie Payne of Conway, Ark., and Miss Daphne Boyd of New Albany, Miss., are state winners to be presented by presented by Mrs. Loch.
