Last week, City Council member Janet Hooks surprised many at Christian Brothers High School. In a meeting of the council's Public Works and Transportation Committee, Hooks announced that Baptist Memorial Health Care and Boyle Investment Co. have agreed to reimburse the city for its share of land acquisition costs in the Walnut Grove widening project. Then Hooks wondered if the city should pursue a similar reimbursement from CBHS, the private boys school that has been on Walnut Grove since 1965.
50 years ago — 1976
In his letter to a church official, Lord Acton in 1887 also said that "power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." When Hope Eastman keynotes a public conference on "Privacy in a Free Society" tomorrow,
she also will be talking about the increasing powers of government and public officials and the loss of freedom among private citizens. Ms. Eastman, who has been associate director of the Washington office of the American Civil Liberties Union since 1969, will speak tomorrow at the conference at Clough Hall on the Southwestern campus.
75 years ago — 1951
The annual general membership meeting of the Memphis Open Air Theatre will be held at the Gayoso tomorrow beginning with a luncheon. Chief business at hand, said Rodney Baber, president, yesterday, is the election of nine new directors to three-year terms, and approval of two proposed changes to the constitution and by-laws passed by the board at its last meeting Friday. The proposed changes would move up the annual election from next January to this September, and would drop from membership on the Board any member absent from three board meetings without valid excuse.
100 years ago — 1926
More than 50 local Kiwanians are expected to attend the Kentucky-Tennessee convention to be held at Chattanooga Oct. 11, 12 and 13, according to Sam O. Bates, chairman of the convention committee and past president of the Memphis club. The local delegation is to be headed by Mr. Bates and J.A. Keefe, district trustee. According to Mr. Keefe, the first day will be devoted to sightseeing around the many historic spots in the Chattanooga district.
