The Town of Collierville's Historical Preservation Tax does not apply to churches and schools, the town's Board of Mayor and Aldermen decided Monday night. Town Administrator James Lewellen asked the board to interpret the ordinance assessing the tax, which in one paragraph exempts new churches and schools entirely, yet later specifies which parts of the buildings are exempt, implying some portion of the tax may have to be levied.

The Shelby County Attorney General's office yesterday announced a new policy designed to head off the practice of last-minute plea bargaining by defendants. The new policy requires criminal defendants to decide — on their court date three to four weeks before their trial date — whether
they want to plead guilty or go to trial, said Exec. Asst. Atty. Terry Lafferty. Currently defendants and their attorneys may accept a plea bargain the day of the trial.

The Office of Price Stabilization "will be taken to the merchant's doorstep," Harrold B. Jones, OPS district director here, said yesterday in announcing a new educational program for West Tennessee. Citizens of Covington, Ripley, Dyersburg, Humboldt, Huntingdon and Lexington will have a chance to get firsthand information about the agency's regulations when OPS price specialists conduct one-day clinics in each of these localities.
