Two people allegedly involved in a mass shooting on Aug. 8 have been arrested, the Memphis Police Department said in a social media statement.
The shooting left four people injured and one person dead. One of the four people injured was in stable condition, but remained at the hospital Aug. 10.
MPD did not identify the two people it had arrested, but said it had obtained arrest warrants for both earlier on Aug. 10. The department said investigators were trying to identify a third suspect.
According to MPD, officers arrived at a home in the 1700 block of Brookins Street at 11:19 p.m. on the 8th and found three victims. A man and a woman were taken to the hospital in critical condition, and another woman was taken to the hospital, where she died.
Two other victims, MPD said, were taken to the hospital by private vehicles. Three of the four surviving victims had been released from the hospital by the morning of Aug. 10.
"Preliminary information revealed that a large party was taking place at the location when a fight broke out," MPD said in the statement. "During the altercation, suspects fired multiple rounds before fleeing the scene."
The shooting is believed to have been an isolated incident, and investigators are asking anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at (901)-528-2274.
Local officials call shooting 'senseless,' identify dead victim
Aug. 10 also saw a group of public officials condemn the shooting and call for community support. Just after noon, Memphis Mayor Paul Young identified the victim who died as 34-year-old Dr. Shandrika Hayslett.
"What happened Saturday night was senseless. A family gathered to celebrate a young person heading off to college, and it ended with a life lost to gun violence," Young said in a statement on social media.
Young said Hayslett earned her doctorate in May this year and planned to to start a family with her husband.
"Her life had so much promise, and her loss is devastating," Young said. "And the impact of that violence reaches far beyond one person. Her family is forever changed. The young people who witnessed it are forever changed. The other victims who were injured are forever changed. Everyone who loved Shandrika, everyone who was there, and all of us who continue to see lives cut short by gun violence carry some part of what happened."
