Hunter Foster, the police officer who shot and killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley, resigned from the Senatobia Police Department, a city official confirmed.
The board of aldermen accepted his resignation Oct. 21, Senatobia Mayor Greg Graves told The Commercial Appeal. The resignation took effect immediately, and Foster is no longer employed with the city, he said.
On Oct. 22, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety released body camera and surveillance footage from the June 14 shooting, which happened at a Walmart in Senatobia, Mississippi.
The city announced June 16 Foster had been placed on leave, but neither the city nor SPD confirmed whether or not Foster was still employed by the department until Oct. 23.
On Oct. 19, the Mississippi Attorney
General's office said the use of force was justified, and the police officer involved would not face criminal charges.
Wiley's family retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump after the shooting. Crump has not commented publicly on whether the family plans to sue.
What happened to Kohen Wiley?
Law enforcement officers with both the Senatobia Police Department and the Tate County Sheriff's Office responded to a shoplifting call at Walmart on U.S. 51 on June 14, according to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.
Upon arrival, officers saw two people and a child fleeing from the store into a vehicle, according to the accounts from law enforcement officers at the time.
Law enforcement said that the car drove toward officers, a claim Crump has denied. One officer shot into the car, and the car fled the scene.
According to MPDS, the occupants of the car arrived at a local hospital where Wiley was pronounced dead, and another person had critical injuries.
The shooting set off days of protests in Senatobia, which drew activists from Memphis to the North Mississippi town, about 40 miles from Downtown Memphis.
