The Exxon gas station at the corner of Poplar Avenue and Highlight Street is set for a long anticipated makeover, costing over $1 million.
A building amendment construction permit was filed Sept. 1 with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development for revised plans at the gas station site, 3487 Poplar Ave. in Memphis.
The gas station site, which is located adjacent to Buster's, has been vacant since January 2024 due to a fire.

According to the permit application, the estimated cost of construction is $1.16 million. The new site will include green energy accommodations, including solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations.
Shelby County Division of Planning and Development Director Brett Ragsdale provided an update
on the project Sept. 1, during the Memphis City Council Planning and Zoning Committee meeting.
Ragsdale said the project was given a building permit extension in December 2025, followed by a three-month extension that will expire on Sept. 11.
Construction at the site, under the new site plan, was expected to begin Sept. 7.
