The main library will close at 5 p.m. Sunday and take an estimated 43.5 percent of library system books and other holdings out of circulation for up to two months. A million items housed at Peabody and McLean won't be available again for public use until the Central Library opens at 3030 Poplar, scheduled for Nov. 10. . .A public party to close the main library will start at 4 p.m. Sunday. A photo display and refreshments are among activities planned before library director Judith Drescher locks the doors.
50 years ago — 1976
A lot of work has been going on preceding next week's Memphis Area Women's Invitational Golf Tournament at Chickasaw Country Club. Registration will be Thursday and Friday for 112 distaff golfers from eight
participating clubs, including Bella Vista, Chickasaw, Colonial, Farmington, Memphis, Ridgeway, Whitehaven and Windyke. "One of the requirements for players who want to qualify for the low net Leila Chaney trophy is that they must be 45 or older," says Gloria Healy, one of the tournament's committee.
75 years ago — 1951
Hundreds of Whitehaven School children lost a friend yesterday with the death of Sidney Bruce Johnson Sr., whom they called "Mr. Johnny." Mr. Johnson died at noon after having been ill three months with leukemia. He was 64. Since 1943 Mr. Johnson had driven a school bus for Whitehaven School. For nine years preceding 1943, he was a Shelby County deputy sheriff.
100 years ago — 1926
TIPTONVILLE, Tenn. ‒ All of Tiptonville turned out today to help the Shriners of West Tennessee, 500 strong, enjoy the day in the city. An automobile caravan from Tiptonville met the visitors when the special train arrived. Three hundred of the visitors were from Memphis. After the party had driven around the town they were taken to Reelfoot Lake, where a fish fry had been prepared at Edgewater Beach. No lack of entertainment was felt. There was music and singing with a Charleston contest as a grand finale.
