A recent permit shows FedEx making a major investment to increase its footprint at Memphis International Airport through a new planned sorting facility.
California-based engineering consultant firm GFT filed a $400 million commercial new construction permit on Aug. 3 with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development for the FedEx Memphis “Hercules” project at 2753 Sprankel Ave. The permit is still under review.
The project is a proposed expansion of the FedEx World Hub at Memphis International Airport, as part of a strategic initiative to modernize and expand sortation capabilities.
Hercules is planned to be a new five-story, 1.6 million-square-foot eCommerce Small Package Sort System (SPSS) facility at the FedEx Memphis Hub.
The facility is planned to replace an existing structure located 2,000 feet to the east.
According to the permit, the facility is designed to increase the company’s capacity for small package sorting operations and will be constructed adjacent to FedEx’s Secondary 25 sorting center.
In October 2024, FedEx opened its “Secondary 25” sorting facility at its World Hub.
The 1.3 million-square-foot facility can handle approximately 56,000 packages per hour and has the capacity to sort more than 484,000 packages daily. The facility replaced some of the hub's older secondary facilities. The term "secondary" refers to the delivery process: Secondary essentially means sorting in a logistical sense.
The “Secondary 25” sorting facility was part of a $1.5 billion investment to expand the World Hub campus in Memphis.
In January, GFT filed an administrative site plan review application for Hercules with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development.
