While searching for a car thief in Desert Hot Springs on Thursday afternoon, sheriff's deputies pulled over a vehicle and detained two people before realizing they had the wrong people, officials said.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department received information about the vehicle burglary suspects a little before 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17.
Aided by a police dog and a helicopter, deputies found what they thought was the stolen vehicle and conducted a "high-risk vehicle stop" by Ocotillo Road and Pierson Boulevard, according to a statement from the sheriff's department.
Deputies detained the two people in the car, but then determined they were not the vehicle burglary suspects. One of the car's occupants was taken into custody on an outstanding
warrant and the other was released at the scene, the sheriff's department said.
The sheriff's department was still investigating the vehicle burglary.
