More than 10,000 cases of tofu have been recalled in dozens of states, including California, over possible chemical contamination concerns.
The pre-cooked tofu, manufactured by the Oakland-based company Hodo, was recalled starting Aug. 7 over the possibility the product was contaminated with ink, according to a report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
In an emailed statement on Sept. 1, the company said it initiated the recall for selected lots of Hodo Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu "out of an abundance of caution," adding that no additional products have been affected.
Hodo initiated the recall after noticing discoloration during the scale-up of a new product, which prompted additional testing of the Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu, the company
said in an Aug. 31 online statement.
"Hodo is continuing to investigate the cause," the company said.
Based on its initial assessments, the company said it is trying to determine if the "chili oil and heat may have contributed to potential migration from the printed film packaging into the product."
No injuries or illnesses have been reported in relation to the recalled product, the company said.
Which lots of tofu are affected by recall?
The affected 8-ounce packages have a UPC code of 850565007842 and best if used by dates spanning from May to November.

The product was distributed to wholesale distributors, retail locations, and directly to consumers in the following 29 states from Jan. 16 to July 16, according to Hodo:

What to do with recalled tofu?
Consumers should not eat the recalled tofu, Hodo said.
Anyone who has purchased the recalled tofu can return it to the original place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers can also request a voucher to redeem a replacement product online, the company said.
