A former Southern California college swimmer has been charged with second-degree murder after authorities say he fatally beat a security guard with a 5-gallon water bottle at a Hawaii resort.
Legend Storer, 20, is accused in the death of Michael Dyer, 63, both of Lahaina, according to a criminal complaint filed Aug. 7 in Maui District Court.
USA TODAY Co. could not immediately reach an attorney for Storer.
Storer has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and indecent exposure, The Los Angeles Times reported.
An online Concordia University Irvine roster lists a “Legend Storer” as a member of the school’s swim and dive team for the 2024-2025 season. The private, Christian university did not immediately respond
to a request for comment Aug. 11.
University officials confirmed to Southern California News Group that the Storer listed on the roster is the same person charged in Hawaii.
What officials say happened
Maui police said they responded to a report of a naked man, later identified as Storer, wandering a Kahana neighborhood just after 3 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Officers found Storer, who was nude with numerous cuts on his body, about 30 minutes later, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital for an evaluation.
At about 5:30 a.m., officers responded to the Sands of Kahana — a condominium resort in Lahaina — after a man was found unresponsive, police said. The man, later identified as Dyer, died at the scene.
An initial investigation, which included reviewing surveillance footage, showed that at about 1:45 a.m., Storer approached Dyer at the resort.
Dyer, according to a GoFundMe, was working a graveyard shift as a security guard at the resort.
According to prosecutors, Storer assaulted Dyer with a 5-gallon water bottle before fleeing on foot.
After investigators later determined the naked man found in Kahana was the same man seen in the surveillance footage, Storer was arrested and booked into jail, according to police.
A coworker told Hawaii News Now that Dyer was on lunch break when he was attacked.
“He was a great person, and he was just in his office having a cheeseburger on his lunch break. And he had a wife ... It’s horrible,” Bell Hill told the outlet.
Dyer was married to his wife for 26 years, according to the GoFundMe.
Storer graduated from Maui Preparatory Academy in 2024 and was a two-time champion in Hawaii’s Maui Interscholastic League, according to the online Concordia University Irvine roster. Though Storer competed with the college swim team during the 2024-2025 academic year, he did not return to the university the next year, a university spokesperson told The Los Angeles Times.
Storer is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear for arraignment Wednesday, Aug. 12, according to court records.
